I'm happy that I found this place. Something happened to me a few weeks ago but I dare not tell any of my acquaintances or close friends out of fear that they think me mad. Perhaps the people on this forum will understand what I have to say.
My name is Steven Hardtberg, I live in a small german village named Villip just 45 minutes drive from Bonn. Being a foreigner myself from the United Kingdom I notice the peculiar habits and oddities of the people who live here. The village consists of mainly houses just as you would expect of a simple german village. In the center of the village is an old bar out of which drunken men stumble in the eerie mist of the night saying peculiar things and making odd clicking noises in a tongue which I have difficulty reconstructing. Obviously, I do my best not to talk to much to the locals. Next to it is a church which always remains empty even on sundays where most devout christians would be in church. For the most part I keep to myself as I study chemistry in the University of Bonn. I have numerous projects, experiments and data to analyze and process. This keeps me busy through the evening where most would be doing something more recreational in nature.
I spend my nights in my small house on the fringe of the village, which is surrounded by a dense forrest. I have never traveled far into the forest until one month I continuously had these reoccurring nightmares. I always imagine myself in this forrest, scurrying around and never knowing what I am doing nor why I am doing it. Theres always a dense fog and I just crawl on endlessly in the darkness. For the most part I tried to ignore these dreams but they would just never stop. Ive begun to lose sleep over it because I lie at night thinking desperately over what these dreams could mean. Is it because I study too much and don't take enough leisure time for myself?
One night, when I found it particularly hard to fall asleep I looked outside my window next to my bed. I saw a quaint light shining in the forrest. I tried to ignore it at first but it never went away. The light shined so brightly into my room that I could hardly sleep. Even if my intrusive curiosity for the light and my dreams were to subside, the light was just too brilliant and fantastic to ignore. Since I wasn't sleeping much anyway I decided to look outside the window again at this strange light.
Upon closer inspection, the light is unlike anything that I have ever seen before. It's very difficult now for me to put in words what it was like. It had a sort of chromatic feeling to it like all of the colors in the rainbow were melded into one color. However, it was not a white color as one would expect. It seemed physically impossible and yet there it was in front of me.
At first I thought it might be a teenager's flashlight adventuring the rim of the forrest but the light would not move. It stood there, deathly still. Perhaps a car which had stopped functioning and the driver had left the lights on for help? That could not be because of the strange quality of the light. It was obvious after further thinking that no man made contraption could ever possibly make light like what I was seeing. I decided that I would investigate this light myself. After throwing some shoes and slapping on the clothes that I had worn that day back on my body and retrieving a flashlight from beneath my sink I decided to set off to investigate this strange illuminating source.
The closer I got to the edge of the forrest the colder it seemed to become. Chills ran up my spine as the freezing air licked my skin. The moisture in the air made my breath visible and it was clear to me that it was no sane man ought to be wandering outside alone. Who knows what could be waiting in the shadows? I reassured myself that as long as I had my flashlight I would be okay. Without looking back on the village I walked determinately towards the light which was surely shining brighter than before. After crossing the threshold into the forrest the images from my dreams kept coming back to me. I recognized parts of the forrest because I had been there before. It was surely a strange feeling.
As I got closer to the light my flashlight started to flicker until eventually it gave out. I was sure that the batteries that I had used were fresh. There was some other suppressing force which was hindering its function. I began to taste fear. Without light I would not know what horrible boars or dangerous stags that I would find in the dark. However, I found the light attractive, it beckoned me and my curiosity could not withstand its alluring shine and its mysterious colors. For some reason which was beyond my understanding I had to know what made the source I could not go on having abandoned my quest. The closer I got to the source the more my sense of self faded away. Before I knew it I was walking helplessly towards my target. It gives me shivers to think of how mindlessly and easily this had all occurred. If I had known what was happened I would have struggled against it in an attempt to regain control of my body.
Eventually I regained mastery over my limbs. I noticed that I was in a circular clearing. The ground was made purely of dirt and soil, nothing grew in this area. In the center of the clearing was a perfectly square cube, lying on the ground. At first glance I thought that the material must have been made of iron or some sort of natural earthly element. How it came to be was completely beyond me as there was no rust to be seen, the cube was sunk into the ground which suggested that it had been there for a prolonged time. On top of this cube was a statuette unlike any that I had seen before. It is almost impossible to describe for I only saw it over a short time. The amorphous nature of this statuette suggested that the material was of some glassy nature but the geometry of this object was constantly shifting. I only call it a statuette by analogy since the base of the object was completely static in relation to the rest of it. Vague figures could be made out of the moving shapes, hideous and loathsome creatures which are almost too frightening and sickening to recall. The strange shapes seemed to form tentacles and eyes and the most illogical places, the mess which it created resulted in a huge strain on my mind. The quivering tentacles and stalks morphed into each other and apart again. Two tentacles could become one or three or even four. This made the movement very difficult to track. Trying to keep an eye on one object would mean that my eyes would move in very unnatural directions. Because of this I tried my best not to focus too hard on the object. From the center of the shifting and reshaping statuette the source of the glow is present. It shone upon all of the trees in a mesmerizing fashion. I almost could not look away, using every ounce of self control in me I tried to keep my legs where they were and not move a step closer. I was sweating since it took so much effort that it began to make me uneasy.
I wanted to turn and run away but my body would not move. It was hard enough to stand still but doing a rebellious action of my own took more brain power than I could ever imagine. Slowly my unease turned to fright and eventually into complete panic. Adrenaline rushed through my body as my heart started pounding. Why couldn't I move? What drew me to this thing? So many questions raced through my head at a completely incomprehensible pace. I regretted ever leaving my house. I slowly dropped to my knees as my awareness began to fade away. I heard a noise behind me but I was too exhausted to do anything more than to notice it. Upon further recollection I can recognize a certain chanting in a most alien language which caused deep repulsion and loathing even with myself half passed out. An abominable form of sayings which could only me uttered by someone or something of truly evil and despicable in nature. I have a fuzzy recollection of figures in the light before I passed out completely.
I woke up the next morning where I had lost consciousness, the cube and the statuette had vanished leaving only an imprint behind. My mind felt backwards as if it no longer understood reality. Words meant what where were not supposed to and when I tried to move my left hand my big toe wiggled. I was sick from the disorientation. Never have I had such a wretched feeling in my entire life. After an hour the effect wore off and I ran as fast as I could back to the safety of my house. To this day I have no idea what came over me, the light has not returned yet but I have returned to the clearing where the strange artifacts once stood. I want to put more research into this and learn what happened to me. I just need a lead in order to get started...
